Northfield Mount Hermon School

Ford Cottage

Summary

The Ford Cottage is the Head of School’s residence at the Northfield Mount Hermon School. It is a graceful Georgian mansion built in 1911 which had suffered significant wear and tear and no longer presented an image in keeping with the School’s stature. The kitchen, furnishings, appliances and building systems were outmoded, not fitting the needs of a modern family, and energy in-efficient.

The School engaged Bread Loaf to provide Integrated Project Management services to plan and design restoration of the interior and exterior of the building. This work included: redesign the entry, south porch, kitchen and bathrooms; replacing the outdated heating, electrical and plumbing systems; improving the energy efficiency of the building and installation of an elevator. Bread Loaf also coordinated the complete Lead Abatement of the entire residence to meet State of Massachusetts Lead Law requirements.

Upon completion of Ford Cottage, Bread Loaf also provided the School planning, design and estimating services for improvements at Bullman House and Mayberry House.
