Career and Technical Center & Middle School

…Because of the old Career and Tech Center, we felt disconnected from the historic High School. Your creativity, sensitivity to our neighborhood, and thorough understanding of our program provided us with a simple design solution that has exceeded our expectations for what we thought was possible on this difficult site.”

Ed Henessey Building Committee Chair Littleton Union School District

Summary

Bread Loaf was retained to provide Integrated Project Management services by the Union School District of Littleton, New Hampshire to plan, design and build the expansion of the Hugh J. Gallen Career and Technical Center and Middle School. The Career and Technical Center was to provide programs including: Automotive Technology, Broadcasting Technology, Building Construction Technology, Business Computer Technology, Teacher Education, Fire Science, Health Science and Technology Education.

The existing facilities that served these programs were at the end of their useful life. It was determined that a four story expansion, which respected the historic façade of the existing turn of the century high school, would be the most cost effective solution on the very constrained site.

Challenges during construction of the project included: demolition of the existing technical school in the heavily populated neighborhood, building next to the existing high school while it remained in session and the entire building site being tightly enclosed by public streets.
